Alex Yoong was a former Formula 1 and A1GP driver, who has been involved in the business side of Motorsport since 2005. From starting his own team, to securing sponsors and building race cars in Asia.
He began his racing career in go-karts at the age of 15, and quickly moved up to Formula Renault in 1994. He competed in various racing series in Asia and Europe, including the Formula 3 Championship and the British Formula Renault Championship.
In 2001, he made his debut in Formula One, becoming the first Malaysian driver to compete in the sport. He joined the Minardi team for the second half of the season and scored his first F1 point at the 2002 Australian Grand Prix. He continued to race for Minardi in 2002, but struggled with the car's reliability and finished the season with just two points. During his Formula One career Alex was team mate to double world champion Fernando Alonso and multiple race winner Mark Webber.
After leaving Formula One, Alex returned to racing in Asia, where he achieved success in the A1 Grand Prix series, winning the championship with the Malaysian team in the 2005-2006 season. He also competed in the Audi R8 LMS Cup and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, winning races and podium finishes.
Alex also was the head of Driver's Development at Caterham F1 for several years. While he has been broadening his horizons in several fields he has continued testing and racing around the world with a focus in Asia. For the last three years he has been competing in the Audi R8 LMS Cup for Audi alongside other GT3 racing such as the Nurburgring 24hours and GT Asia. In 2015 he was crowned Champion in the Audi R8 LMS Cup with five wins.
In addition to his racing career, he has also worked as a motorsports commentator and analyst for various media outlets, including ESPN Star Sports and Fox Sports Asia.
Today, Alex Yoong is widely regarded as one of Malaysia's most successful race drivers, having achieved success both at home and on the international stage. He continues to be involved in motorsports, working as a commentator and team owner in various racing series.
