H.E. Dr. Dian Triansyah Djani is currently the Special Senior Advisor to the Minister for Foreign Affairs on Priority Issues and is also serving as Indonesia’s G20 Co-Sherpa. He is also Chairman of the Board of Bank Mandiri Europe Limited (BMEL) and Advisor to ALAMI Group, a start-up Fintech.
He was the Ambassador/Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations and other International Organizations in New York (2016-2021). Prior to that assignment, Ambassador Djani was the Director General for America and Europe (2012-2016), Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the UN, WTO, and other International Organization in Geneva (2009-2012) as well as Director General for ASEAN of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2005-2009).
In the Foreign Ministry, he also held various position, among others: Head of Section for International Monetary; Head of Section for APEC; Deputy Director for D8; Director for Multilateral Trade and Industry; Director for Intra Regional Cooperation; Director for ASEAN Economic Affairs; Director General for ASEAN Cooperation; and Director General for America and Europe in charge of 88 countries in Europe and the Americas.
As the G20 Co-Sherpa of Indonesia, he coordinated the sherpa track as well as organized various meetings of G20 including the Summit in Indonesia’s Presidency of G20 for 2022. He chaired the Sherpa Meeting of the G20 and successfully Chaired/negotiated the Bali G20 Leaders’ Declaration during difficult times as a result of the pandemic, global economic downturn and the invasion of Ukraine.
In the United Nations New York, he served as President of the Security Council, Vice President of the United Nations General Assembly, Chairman of the Economic and Social Committee/Second Committee and Indonesian Ambassador to the UN Security Council. He was also tasked by the Secretary General of the United Nations as member of the High Level Panel on UN Habitat; Vice President to the UN Committee on Decolonisation/Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian.
In Geneva, Ambassador Djani served as the Vice President of the UN Human Rights Council; President of the UNCTAD Trade and Development Board; Chairman of the G 77 and China in UNCTAD for 2012.
He represented Indonesia in various international conferences, such as the UN General Assembly, Non-Aligned Movement, World Trade Organization (WTO), D8, G77, G15, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), Asia-Middle East Dialogue (AMED), Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM), UNCTAD, WIPO, UNIDO, WHO, ILO, ITU, Conference on Disarmament, UNDP , Asian-African Summit, and Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). He was Indonesia’s trade negotiator in WTO and APEC.
As Director General of ASEAN Cooperation (2005-2009), he was Head of Delegation to the ASEAN Standing Committee and in many ASEAN Conferences. He is currently chairing the ASEAN Eminent Person Group tasked for drafting the ASEAN Vision 2025-2045.
He was also a member of the Global Commission on Internet Governance which was established in 2014 to articulate and advance strategic vision for the future of internet governance.
Mr. Dian Triansyah Djani, received his graduate Degree in Economics from the University of Indonesia specializing in international trade, and the Graduate Programme in Economic Development at Vanderbilt University, USA. His Doctoral degree is in International Relations from Padjajaran Univeristy, Indonesia.
