Professor Dr Eka J Wahjoepramono is the first neurosurgeon in South East Asia to successfully operate on the brainstem. Since successfully performing brain stem surgery to save the life of a labourer, Dr. Eka and his team have performed more than 50 brainstem operations with no incidence of death and with minimum side effects — the two main indicators of a successful procedure. The achievement has not only affirmed Siloam Hospital in Karawaci, Tangerang, as a neurosurgery specialist center, but also placed Indonesia on the world map of neurosurgery.
Dr. Eka is also founder of Indonesian Brain Foundation, aimed at assisting financially underprivileged patients. Contrary to long-held wisdom, Prof Eka always performs surgery with his six-member team as he is a firm believer of the transfer of knowledge that will help to propel Indonesia's achievement in neurosurgery to be a force to be reckoned within international forums. He has written articles for international scientific publications on brainstem surgery.
He now serves as Chairman of Neuroscience Center in Siloam Hospital and is also a member of many medical societies such as President of the Congress Annual Scientific Meeting of Indonesian Society of Neurological Surgeons (PIT PERSPEBSI) 2006 and President elect of The Asian Oceanian International Congress On Skull Base Surgery, 2010-2012.
His recent positions also include Founder of Indonesia Brain Foundation, President elect of World Academy of Neurological Surgeons and Founder of World Academy of Neurological Surgeons. He currently sits as Dean of the Universitas Pelita Harpan (UPH) Faculty of Medicine.
